NEW DELHI: A day after a couple died by suicide in east Delhi's Madhu Vihar, police said the two may have been under tremendous financial stress and were likely being harassed by moneylenders. Three bottles suspected to contain poison have been recovered from the house.
Dinesh Tiwari, a cloth salesman, and his wife Neelam, a homemaker, were found dead on Wednesday, following which a case of abetment of suicide was registered. The couple is survived by two children, aged 17 and 12.
Family members on Thursday said they were unaware about any financial stress the couple may have been going through. "I used to talk to Dinesh occasionally but he never mentioned any financial constraints. If we had known about the situation, we would have helped them and come up with a solution," said one of his relatives.
He said Dinesh had moved to Delhi from Almora 10-15 years ago. Hailing from a poor family, he continued to struggle to sustain his family in the city.
Dinesh's elder brother Yogesh Tiwari (38) said, "My brother and sister-in-law were extremely humble and soft-natured people. The family dynamic also seemed very peaceful, there were hardly any major fights or conflicts between them." He added that he last spoke to Dinesh three days ago.
Relatives told TOI the couple had fallen into the trap of some private informal moneylenders in their neighbourhood because of a lack of knowledge about bank loans and government documents. Some family members demanded justice, especially for the children who have been left to fend for themselves after the deaths of their parents.
"Their future is unclear. We wonder if they will be able to continue in their school in Delhi. Most likely, they will be shifted back to Almora as Dinesh's brothers won't be able to take up the additional responsibility, given their financial status," said a family member.
Meanwhile, police are expected to send a notice to the people named in the suicide note and ask them to join the probe.
