DU students abduct businessman from outside east Delhi home

NEW DELHI: To make a quick buck, four youths — three of them first-year students of Delhi University — abducted a

businessman

from outside his house in east Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar around 12 noon on Sunday. The youths pulled the target, Bambam Kumar, inside their Honda Civic car, blindfolded and gagged him.

As they drove the businessman around, the accused — Sagar Rana (20), Sushant (22), Vikki Kadiyan (22) and Amar Pandit (19) — called up his family members and friends. A police officer told TOI: “The four youths first called Sunil, a friend of the victim. They instructed him to inform the businessman’s family members about the kidnapping and arrange for cash within six hours.”

While police didn’t elaborate on the initial

ransom

demanded by the kidnappers, in subsequent calls to Kumar’s family, the youths brought it down to Rs 3 lakh. In the meantime, they continued to drive around east Delhi and Ghaziabad.

Kumar’s friend, Sunil, alerted the cops around 4pm. Multiple teams were constituted at Patparganj Industrial Area police station and other units were informed about the developments.

A technical team started tracking the location of the victim’s mobile phone that was still operational and a digital map was created. The teams concluded that the victim was being moved around in a vehicle and pickets on border points were alerted to look out for suspicious movements.

Meanwhile, the police were told that the family of the victim had negotiated the final ransom amount and that the drop-off was fixed as Anand Vihar at 6pm. Policemen in plain clothes were deployed at the bus station as a relative of Kumar arrived at the spot with the cash bag. The cops stationed there noticed two youths picking up the bag and immediately nabbed them.

On questioning, the duo revealed their plot and led the police to Kumar who was lying in the rear seat of their car parked nearly a kilometre away. The two youths were then asked to make a call to their friends and inform them that they had collected the money and would meet them at a particular location.

The cops then intercepted the other two youths and overpowered them. Kumar was rescued unhurt.

Probe revealed that the four youths belonged to well-to-do families in Ghaziabad and were looking to earn quick money for their daily expenses. They got to know that Kumar had recently acquired some money.
