Draped in patriotism! Tapestry of 1,900 sarees a visual spectacle
New Delhi: Visitors and guests at this year’s Republic Day parade were in for a visual treat, with the seating area along Kartavya Path displaying different kinds of sarees and drapes from across the country and offering a spectacular backdrop.Among the many installations, the graceful saree took its pride of place, adding a touch of history to the vibrant celebration of India’s cultural legacy. Mounted at a height with wooden frames, the ‘Anant Sutra’ installation showcased nearly 1,900 sarees from various parts. The tapestry also had QR codes that could be scanned by visitors eager to know more about the type of weaving and embroidery used. From the opulent brocades to the luxurious Kanjeevarams, artistic Jamdanis and the intricate Balucharis, the saree showcase was a visual feast. Resplendent Himroos, elaborate Tanchois, breathtaking Patolas and geometric ikkats added to the kaleidoscope of colours. The display was not only limited to the mainland; it embraced the bold and dramatic traditional weaves and drapes from the northeast, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh as well. The visitors at Kartavya Path keenly examined the display and the myriad choices – the Teliarumal from Telangana, the elegant Sungadi from Tamil Nadu and the artistic Batik from Santiniketan. The vibrant Sanganeri Dabbu print from Rajasthan also shared space with the Morangphee from Manipur, the exquisite Kosa from Chhattisgarh, the regal Vidarbha, as well as the Peshwari and Nirali Kinar. The saree was celebrated as a canvas and a medium of expression and its timeless beauty captured through different designs, whether it was the Soojni from Bihar or the intricate Tilla and Kashida from Kashmir.Kalpana, a 55-year-old homemaker who was attending the parade, told TOI: “As soon as I entered the venue, all I noticed was this big saree installation. I was left amazed when I found out that these are almost all the kinds of sarees that our country has. I am glad an attire that many women in the country wear got a place at the Republic Day parade.”An official from the ministry of culture said that the initiative wasn’t only a celebration of textiles, but “a heartfelt tribute to India’s women and weavers who have preserved this timeless tradition through generations”.Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes, messages and quotes !
