NEW DELHI: Former CM and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday claimed that a senior leader of the BJP admitted to wanting to derail the Delhi government by having him arrested.

Kejriwal was interacting with journalist after visiting Delhi University's North Campus with CM Atishi and former deputy CM Manish Sisodia to inspect the conditions of the road.

Kejriwal claimed that works of public welfare "stalled by the BJP" will be now resumed and all damaged roads in the city will be repaired.

The former CM claimed that he was sent to jail because the BJP's target was to defame the AAP government in Delhi by stalling work for the people.

Kejriwal recounted a conversation he had with a BJP leader and expressed deep concern over the alleged motives behind his recent detention.

"I met one of their senior leaders and asked, 'What did they gain with my arrest?' His response left me stunned," Kejriwal said.

"He told me that the Delhi government had been derailed, that the entire city came to a halt. This answer saddened and shocked me."

Kejriwal further questioned whether the BJP intended to "trouble the people of Delhi" by targeting his administration.

"I want to tell the people of Delhi not to worry. I am here now, and all halted works will resume," he said. "I was in action mode even when I was in jail, and I will continue to address the issues that matter to the people of Delhi."

Kejriwal was lodged in Tihar jail for five months in an excise policy case and was released earlier this month after being granted bail by the Supreme Court.

He stepped down as Delhi chief minister last week, saying he would return to the post after getting a "certificate of honesty" from Delhi people in the Assembly polls in February.
