Delhi wakes up to dense fog, chill; temperatures dips to 7°C

NEW DELHI: Delhi experienced severe cold wave conditions on Friday with thick fog blanketing the city and temperatures falling to 7 degrees Celsius, according to IMD reports.

Residents sought shelter in night homes across various locations, including the Yamuna Bazar area and New Delhi Railway Station, to escape the harsh weather conditions.


The city's air quality remained concerning, with the AQI reaching 434 at 8am, as reported by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), placing it in the 'severe' category.

Different areas of Delhi registered alarming air quality levels. RK Puram recorded an AQI of 453 and 452 at Rohini, 436 at Shadipur, and 451 at Vivek Vihar.


For reference, the AQI scale categorises readings as follows: 0-50 is good, 51-100 is satisfactory, 101-200 is moderate, 201-300 is poor, 301-400 is very poor, and 401-500 is severe.

The cold wave conditions extended beyond Delhi, affecting various parts of North India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts continued cold wave to severe cold wave conditions across most northern regions.

"Today's Weather Warning: Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions at a few places over Himachal Pradesh. Cold wave conditions at a few places over Punjab, at isolated places over Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana and Rajasthan. Dense fog at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Ground frost at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh. " IMD said.

Earlier on Thursday, a cold wave in the national capital caused low visibility. With the minimum temperature dropping to 7.4 degrees Celsius, visibility in Delhi was recorded at 250 meters at 8am.
