NEW DELHI: After a three-month wait, the standing committee of South Delhi Municipal Corporation on Tuesday approved a proposal for running open-air and

terrace restaurants

by licensed entities.

The project, which now needs the approval of the House, will help the cash-strapped civic agency earn an annual revenue of Rs 5 crore. The committee chairman, Rajdutt Gahlot, said open space or terrace could be used only as serving areas on submitting a building structural safety certificate from a registered structural engineer that clearly mentions the purpose.

The proposal was passed following a representation from National Restaurant Association of India for the same and to generate more revenue for the corporation, Gahlot said. "Nowadays the dining industry is trying to maximise outdoor space usage due to Covid-19," he added.

The annual fee for four-star hotels and

restaurants

will be Rs 200 per square feet while those falling under lower categories will get it at half the price. South Delhi has nearly 2,000 restaurants eateries.

A permission from Delhi Fire Services is also a must due to fire safety concerns.
