Delhi traffic cops kept on their toes as they crack down on GRAP IV violations

NEW DELHI: Cracking down on motorists violating the Graded Response Action Plan measures to curb air pollution, Delhi Traffic Police has so far prosecuted over 600 petrol cars and around 2,600 diesel cars for violating restriction rules. Vehicles without the Pollution under Control Certificate and diesel and petrol vehicles plying beyond their permitted 10 and 15 years, respectively, have also been impounded. Motorcycle patrol teams and mobile prosecution teams are on the move to implement GRAP. Twenty checking teams comprising traffic policemen and transport department officials have also deployed on the city's borders

Delhi Traffic Police is not only prosecuting violators of the norms under the different stages of GRP, but also spreading awareness about the various restrictions. Stage IV of GRAP, implemented on Sunday, bans the entry of trucks into Delhi except for those carrying essential commodities or providing essential services. Electric, LNG and CNG trucks are permitted to come to Delhi. Therefore, the traffic cops are strictly regulating the entry of trucks into the capital.

On Sunday, SS Yadav, special commissioner of police (Traffic), said, "In an effort to control non-destined goods vehicles coming to Delhi, we carried out checks on 622 vehicles and turned back 244. We allowed only those carrying essential commodities with valid permission to enter the capital."

In addition, 1,127 challans were issued to vehicles operating without a valid PUCC, while acting against diesel and petrol vehicles aged, respectively, more than 10 and 15 years, 225 BS III petrol vehicles and 892 BS IV diesel vehicles were booked for the defying the restrictions on their running and two vehicles were impounded. Police also focused on parking violations, making 987 bookings for obstructive or improper parking, issuing 351 notices and getting 295 vehicles towed away by traffic cranes.

Under GRAP Stage III implemented on November 2, Delhi and the NCR states were to impose strict restrictions on the running of BSIII petrol and BSIV diesel four wheelers in the city and in the districts of Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Gautam Budh Nagar.

Yadav said, "On November 3 and 4, 387 BS III petrol vehicles and 1,737 BS IV diesel vehicles were booked, while 1,263 vehicles without PUCC were fined. In addition, 2,485 challans and 2,132 notices were issued for improper parking, 301 for driving against traffic flow, 1,602 for 'no entry' violations and 10 for carrying uncovered construction waste."
