NEW DELHI: Delhi government on Sunday issued directives to all its schools not to have classes for students upto eighth standard till Tuesday in view of prevailing cold wave condition in the national capital.
"The Government has decided to give off to students up 8th standard in its schools on Monday and Tuesday," a government spokesman said.
He said education minister Arvinder Singh Lovely also issued an advisory to the private schools asking them to give relief to the students from the biting cold.
"But it is up to the schools to take a decision on it. The advisory is not binding," he said.
Many private schools have also decided to extend the winter vacation due to the cold wave condition in the capital.
Principal of DPS, R K Puram, Shyama Chona said the school authorities have decided to extend the vacation and the institution will reopen on Wednesday instead of Monday.
"We are extending the vacation so as to protect the children from the cold," she said.
The authorities of DPS Vasant Vihar and DPS East of Kailash, which were to reopen on Monday, have also decided to extend the vacation and will now open on December 12.
Many other private schools are also contemplating on extending the vacations while authorities of some other prominent schools said they are not stretching the vacation.
The met department predicted that foggy conditions are likely to remain for the next couple of days.
With cold wave condition continuing, parents welcome the decision of the Government and private schools to extend the vacation.
"I was scared about sending my six-year-old son to his school. But now I am relieved as government has decided to give relief to the children," said Smita Gupta, a resident of Jungpura Extension.
