Delhi LG VK Saxena tells police to launch updated traffic management app

NEW DELHI: Lieutenant governor VK Saxena has directed Delhi Police to launch a revamped and upgraded Traffic Prahari app to enhance citizen participation in traffic management.

The app, set to be launched on Sept 1, will enable citizens to report real-time traffic violations by uploading photos and videos, helping police to address these effectively.

The app, previously known as the Traffic Sentinel mobile app, has been modified. Citizens will be rewarded monthly for their proactive efforts, with rewards ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000.

Saxena, who chaired a review meeting on the initiative on Thursday, said the scheme will provide citizens with an opportunity to participate in governance and earn income while contributing to maintaining city traffic. The LG appealed to citizens to come forward as proactive stakeholders in solving traffic and parking problems. “The effectiveness of the scheme will be reviewed after six months, and rewards will be enhanced accordingly,” he said.

The app empowers citizens to report various violations, including dangerous driving, improper parking and red light jumping.

According to officials, the top four performers will receive monthly rewards of Rs 50,000, Rs 25,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000, respectively, based on their activities and reporting of traffic violations. The first monthly rewards will be distributed in Oct after analysing the activities of the "Traffic Praharis" throughout Sept.

The app can be downloaded from the Google Play Store and App Store, and registered users can report violations. The information will be used for issuing notices under the Motor Vehicles Act. People can register using their mobile number to participate. The app allows citizens to upload photos and videos of traffic violations, provide mandatory information such as date, time, place, registration number and type of violation.

The information is mandatory to issue a notice under Section 133 Motor Vehicle Act. “GPS coordinates, date and time are picked from mobile handset directly. The acceptance or rejection of the reported traffic violation is decided by Traffic Police Headquarters,” special commissioner (traffic) Ajay Chaudhary said.

This app will also allow people to report instances of misbehaviour, overcharging or harassment by auto and taxi drivers or their refusal to ferry passengers. People can also report violations like defective number plates, wrong side driving, parking on footpaths, triple riding on bikes, use of mobile phones while driving, violating stop line or yellow line, and driving without helmet or seat belt.

Parking, traffic issues discussed at meet

A traffic management meeting in Mangaluru, chaired by Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur, addressed issues like zebra crossings, barricades, and parking. Proposals included reinstating two-way traffic, installing speed breakers, and stricter parking enforcement. Discussions also covered road safety measures, and the mayor directed officials to implement necessary improvements for better traffic management.

Delhi citizens to pay traffic fines via WhatsApp, Google Pay, and UPI

The transport department in New Delhi plans to simplify challan payments by sending automated violation details via SMS and WhatsApp. Users will be directed to a payment gateway for quick transactions. The initiative also intends to integrate with UPI apps, aiming to enhance compliance and revenue collection.
