NEW DELHI: Six men have been apprehended in relation to the Nangloi incident, wherein a crowd participating in Muharram processions clashed with law enforcement and hurled stones at them, as reported by the police on Friday.

The clashes resulted in injuries to twelve people, including six police officers.

The deputy commissioner of police (Outer), Harendra Singh, has confirmed the identification and arrest of six individuals by the outer district police teams. The arrested individuals are Sahil Salmani (25), Aslam Qureshi (37), Sameer, also known as Choti (23), Sahil Khan (21), as well as Azeem and Sohaib, both aged 23.

As outlined by the police, numerous 'tazia' processions took place in the Nangloi area on July 29, with an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 participants.

The situation turned chaotic when attendees from one or two processions on Rohtak Road began acting unruly, attempting to veer away from the previously agreed-upon route that had been discussed during a coordination meeting with the taziadaran (procession organizers).

While law enforcement attempted to persuade them to adhere to the predetermined route and proceed to the designated burial sites, the majority complied. Nevertheless, a handful of troublemakers instigated the public and resorted to pelting stones.

In response, the police utilized mild force to disperse the unruly crowd, resorting to moderate caning.

Subsequently, the tazia processions were conducted peacefully in the area in accordance with customary and religious practices, as stated by the authorities at that time.
