NEW DELHI: Delhi Traffic Police issued 868 challans for drunken driving on New Year’s Eve, officials said on Thursday.Special enforcement teams were deployed across major roads, nightlife areas and residential neighbourhoods to check for drunk driving, speeding, motorcycle stunts and other risky behaviour.

Breathalyser tests were conducted at multiple checkpoints, with teams shifting locations to prevent motorists from avoiding checks.Alongside traffic enforcement, Delhi Police deployed a 20,000-strong force to maintain law and order during the New Year celebrations. CCTV surveillance and real-time coordination between district control rooms helped monitor crowds and respond quickly to incidents.Areas like Connaught Place, Hauz Khas and Aerocity received extra attention due to their high footfall during the festivities.According to police, the operation was aimed not only at penalising offenders but also at sending a clear message to deter drunk driving, a leading cause of road accidents in the city.
