BJP's national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said there was a demand of eight lakh street vendors of Delhi that their weekly markets should be regularised. "Taking note of this, BJP has decided to regularise them."

Till now, approximately 75,000 street vendors have been identified by the Delhi government and the vending certificate has been issued by MCD to 63,724. The regularisation of street vendors, however, is yet to be executed.

"There are 12 zones in Delhi and night markets will be set up in each of them. Along with this, arrangements will also be made for a special women's market. It will be ensured that more and more employment opportunities are generated," Bhatia said.

The BJP spokesperson further assured protection to street vendors from extortion and promised to provide them with other facilities.

The municipal election will be held on December 4 and the counting of votes will take place on December 7. Campaigning for the election ended on Friday evening.

In 2021, saying that not anyone can be allowed to start hawking, Delhi High Court had asked the Delhi government and the local civic bodies to properly implement the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014. The court asked the civic bodies to present the steps taken by them for organised hawking.

However, on the ground, many businesses are still being run on the streets in an unorganised fashion.
