NEW DELHI: The prime accused in the
murder case of
anti-drug crusader
Rupesh Basoya has been arrested by south Delhi police. Basoya was killed on October 5 in Taimoor Nagar of southeast Delhi.
The suspect, Aakash, is a drug addict. He was involved in the murder of an Ola driver in Kotla Mubarakpur in September, apart from 21 other cases of robbery and murder. Heavily drugged, he had shot Basoya after their cars, both Honda City, had grazed each other.
On October 2, Aakash and his gang had committed a robbery at a restaurant in
Mehrauli
in which they shot at the owner and looted Rs 70,000. They escaped after firing three shots. Minutes later, they shot at a biker and snatched his bike.
Police had arrested gang members Suraj, Akki and Ajay, but Aakash still eluded them. On November 14, police got a tip-off that Aakash would come to his house in Sangam Vihar to meet his parents. He was to flee to Nepal after taking money from his family. “A team led by SHO Atul Kumar arrested the accused,” DCP (south) Vijay Kumar said.
During interrogation, Aakash said that he used to work for a criminal named Rohit Chaudhary, but later formed his own gang. The gang would commit back-to-back snatchings and then go in hiding at hotels after booking rooms through apps. They would consume drugs and again set out to commit crime, police said.
On September 30, they stole a Honda City from Jangpura and reached Taimoor Nagar to get drugs. However, they picked up a fight with the local drug peddlers. To scare them, they fired a few rounds in the air and sped away. On the way, they ran into Basoya and shot him. An hour later, they committed another snatching in Maurya Enclave.
