NEW DELHI: Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta initiated a bamboo plantation drive at the Bhalswa landfill site on Tuesday, marking the beginning of transforming garbage dump areas into green zones.
The initiative, which started with 200 bamboo plants, aims to plant 54,000 more trees in the coming months.
The plantation drive is part of the ongoing efforts that began two years ago to reclaim landfill sites in Delhi.
Bamboo was specifically chosen for the plantation due to its ability to release 30 percent more oxygen and its low water requirements for growth.
"Today, 200 bamboo plants have been planted here. In the coming months, 54,000 more trees will be added," said the L-G, adding that commuters will soon see green patches instead of towering garbage mounds.
"We had promised to free Delhi of pollution and this initiative marks the beginning of a cleaner and greener city," Saxena further stated.
Chief Minister Gupta praised the LG and Central government's initiatives while criticizing previous administrations for their inadequate action on the landfill issue.
"The LG has played a crucial role in ensuring Delhi's transformation. His leadership has been like a shield, protecting the city and guiding its development," Gupta remarked.
The Chief Minister emphasized the Central government's role in utilizing waste material from landfill sites across various Delhi projects, including DDA grounds.
Gupta committed to monthly monitoring of the plantation drive's progress at the Bhalswa site.
"In a year, this place will be completely transformed into a green land. Our mission is to clean and beautify Delhi, and with a double-engine government, we will achieve this goal at double speed," she stated.
The administration aims to convert the landfill area into a green zone, providing Delhi residents with a cleaner environment and improved living conditions.
