Delhi is singing its heart out at karaoke nights

As nightclubs slowly go out of style, music enthusiasts are finding solace in karaoke. Whether it’s a post-work stress-buster or singing the weekend away, Delhi’s karaoke bars have you covered. The tensions of the world melt away when you belt out your favourite songs with a bunch of friends (or friendly strangers).

'It’s a dopamine hit'
People now look for more intent in experiences, instead of just going out. "I feel most comfortable when I’m singing old classics at karaoke nights," says Sandhya, a regular at such events. Hosts say that karaoke helps people feel seen by being on stage. "Even the shy attendees end up hogging the mic! It’s quite a dopamine hit that people wait for all week," Ashish Ahuja, owner of a South Delhi pub says.

Tarang Saggar, who has been hosting karaoke nights in the city for 15 years, says, "Singing at
the top of your voice is similar to screaming to blow off steam, only more musical." She believes karaoke blends the love for music with an interactive platform.

Businesses notice an uptick in footfall during karaoke nights. "We see regulars coming in for the karaoke nights and mingling, helping in creating a community while boosting business," Jyotika Pahuja, marketing manager at a Gurgaon pub, says. Anisha Maker, partner at a Green Park bar, believes in connecting people through music. "We want to be the comfort zone and third space for people to come and unwind," she explains.

Karaoke thrives on iconic bangers from the west, Bollywood and even regional languages. "Since most of our guests are from the Northeast, Mizo, Naga, and Nepali songs are very popular during our karaoke sessions," says Michael Pachuau, who manages events at a bar in Hauz Khas Village.
