NEW DELHI: In a bid to control pollution through vehicles from neighbouring states using adulterated fuels, the state government has asked Environment Ministry to issue directions to ensure supply of good quality fuel at petrol pumps located on the periphery of the capital.
The Delhi government has recently written to the Ministry asking it to curb the "unabated supply" of adulterated fuel by the petrol pumps located on the periphery of the capital, particularly within 50 km.

"This (adulterated fuel) is posing a serious threat to the air quality in the capital. Hence we have written to the Environment Ministry to issue directions to the neighbouring states such as Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to ensure supply of good quality fuel at filling stations," a senior official in Delhi government said.
The official was of the view that the substandard fuel has nullified the effect of gains in the quality of air through converting public transport vehicles to run on CNG.
"The local public transport system in the city comprising mainly buses, auto-rickshaws, taxis, RTVs and others are mostly CNG based. Those vehicles using fuels such as petrol and diesel are periodically checked for pollution norms, ensuring less vehicular pollution.
"The problem, however, arises with the entry of vehicles from the neighbouring states which are often ill-maintained and may be using adulterated fuel as well not meeting the prescribed norms," the official said.
The government also wants the ministry to issue directions to the neighbouring states to give a "major emphasis on proper maintenance and regular pollution checking of vehicles."
