Delhi earthquake: Aftershock will heal Dhaula Kuan seismic zone, says NCS director

NEW DELHI: A 4 magnitude earthquake struck parts of Delhi and the surrounding NCR region early on Monday, triggering panic among residents but causing no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The tremors, which were felt across various parts of the national capital, hit at 5.36am with the epicenter located near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan, a well-known seismic zone. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 5km.


The earthquake's impact was felt across several high-rise buildings in Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad, prompting residents to rush out of their homes.

A woman in her 50s, who was out for a morning walk in Noida's Sector 20, reported feeling the tremors as quite strong, though she didn’t experience them as intensely as those inside buildings.

"We were walking in the park, so we didn’t feel it strongly, but it was quite strong. People came rushing out," she said.

Following the event, Dr OP Mishra, director of the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), reassured the public, stating, "Delhi has been experiencing minor earthquakes, and this is no cause for alarm. The region around Dhaula Kuan is a seismic zone. In fact, after a 4.0 magnitude quake, the aftershock will be 1.2 magnitude lower, which is a natural phenomenon that helps 'heal' the zone."

This was not the first earthquake in the area, as Dhaula Kuan had previously experienced a 4.7-magnitude earthquake in 2007 and a 3.3-magnitude tremor in 2015.

While the earthquake’s tremors were strong enough to cause concern, officials emphasised that there was no immediate threat. Authorities have urged the public to stay calm and contact the emergency helpline 112 for any urgent needs.


Delhi Police also posted on social media, “We hope you all are safe, Delhi!” as leaders, including AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi, expressed their prayers for public safety.


AAP leader Atishi said on X, "A strong earthquake just hit Delhi. I pray to God that everyone is safe."

Resharing Atishi's post, AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal said, "I pray for safety of everyone."
