Delhi CM Rekha Gupta resumes public meetings two days after assault; police probe widens
NEW DELHI: Two days after being injured in an assault during a Jan Sunwai at her residence, Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta resumed public meetings on Friday morning, meeting citizens to hear their grievances.
Gupta also attended an event organised by the Association of Wholesale Readymade Garments Dealers in Gandhi Nagar area.
The CM was attacked on Wednesday by 41-year-old Rameshbhai Sakriya, a resident of Rajkot, Gujarat. He was arrested on the spot and has been booked for attempt to murder.
A Delhi court has sent him to five-day police custody for questioning.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police have intensified their probe into the attack.
Cops analysing dump data
Cops are now analysing dump data from the CM’s personal and official residences to track the accused’s movements before and during the incident.
Dump data provides details of mobile towers, active device signals and call records in a specific area within a given time window.
Police officials said this electronic trail is being used to verify whether Sakriya acted alone or had support. “The data will help reconstruct the sequence of events and establish if more individuals were involved,” an officer said.
In addition, multiple CCTV cameras around both residences are being scanned, while visitor logs, security deployment records and access entries are being examined for potential lapses. Inputs from Sakriya’s interrogation are being cross-verified with technical evidence.
As part of the investigation, Delhi Police on Friday detained one of Sakriya’s friends from Rajkot, who allegedly transferred money to him.
Sources said police are tracking at least 10 people who were in contact with the accused via calls and messages. One suspect is likely to be brought to Delhi by Friday evening, while statements of five others in Rajkot are being recorded after their details surfaced during analysis of Sakriya’s phone.
Senior officers said the investigation is now focused on whether the attack was a “lone act of violence” or the outcome of a larger conspiracy.
