Delhi AQI: Heavy smog blankets city, air quality edges towards ‘severe' zone; airport issues advisory
NEW DELHI: Delhi woke up to dense smog on Saturday, with the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) climbing to 387, edging close to the ‘severe’ category. Videos from across the capital showed streets engulfed in a thick haze, reducing visibility in several areas.
Certain localities were already in the ‘severe’ range, including Anand Vihar (AQI 435), Burari Crossing (415), Chandni Chowk (419), Ghazipur (435), Jahangirpuri (442), RK Puram (404), and Rohini (436), according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The Delhi Airport said flight operations were normal but warned that low visibility procedures were in effect. “Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information,” the advisory added.
Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed most monitoring stations reporting ‘very poor’ air. Officials blamed low wind speeds for trapping pollutants near the ground, while weak western disturbances are unlikely to bring immediate relief.
The city’s Decision Support System identified transport emissions as the largest contributor to pollution, followed by industrial activity. Neighboring districts such as Jhajjar and Sonipat also added to Delhi’s pollution load.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast slightly warmer temperatures this weekend, with minimums around 10–12°C and maximums between 23–25°C. Moderate fog is expected to persist, further worsening air quality. Authorities have urged residents to limit outdoor exposure and follow health advisories as Delhi braces for another challenging winter smog episode.
