NEW DELHI: The
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader on Friday reached the
Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) wearing a mosquito repellent net to protest against the increase in cases of malaria,
chikungunya, and dengue.
AAP MCD LoP Ankush Narang claimed that the ruling
BJP has no strategy to combat malaria, dengue and chikungunya.
"Today, all of us from the Aam Aadmi Party wore mosquito repellent nets to the House because we want to show that malaria, chikungunya, and dengue are increasing rapidly in Delhi. A report by BJP officials shows 36 new malaria cases this week, bringing the total to 333, the highest in five years. Six cases of chikungunya were also reported... Dengue has been increasing rapidly... They have no strategy or campaign to combat malaria, dengue, and chikungunya," Narang told news agency ANI.
He futher said: "When
Arvind Kejriwal was the CM, he ran a campaign to raise public awareness... But the BJP doesn't have such a campaign... They are unable to fight dengue, malaria, and chikungunya."
Malaria, dengue, and chikungunya are mosquito-borne diseases, each caused by different pathogens but spread through mosquito bites. Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites, transmitted by the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It thrives in areas with stagnant water, poor sanitation, and warm climates where mosquitoes breed easily.
Dengue is a viral infection spread by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which are active during the day and breed in clean, stagnant water found in containers, coolers, or discarded tyres. Urban crowding and inadequate waste management often increase dengue cases.
Chikungunya, also spread by Aedes mosquitoes, is caused by the chikungunya virus, producing symptoms similar to dengue but with severe joint pain. Uncovered water storage, clogged drains, and lack of mosquito control measures all contribute to outbreaks of these diseases. Preventing breeding sites, using mosquito nets, repellents, and maintaining cleanliness are key to controlling their spread.
