NEW DELHI: It is not often that a DCP in Delhi chases down criminals without a police team by his side. But on Thursday, four armed men dodged all barricades and PCR vans in south Delhi only to run into deputy commissioner of police (south) Prem Nath. After a hot pursuit lasting 10 minutes, the DCP confronted the criminals and nabbed them after much scuffling and struggle.
The kingpin of this group turned out to be a history-sheeter from Sangam Vihar. His name is Navin and the men were on their way to commit a road robbery.
Senior special commissioner of police (law and order) Deepak Mishra confirmed the incident to
TOI. Mishra, himself, had had a run-in with a criminal fleeing on a stolen bike while on his way home in June this year.
The drama unfolded in early hours when Prem Nath was heading back to his office from a scene of crime in the adjacent district. He was in his official vehicle. Senior inspector Rajender Singh was accompanying him, a source said.
When they reached Defence Colony, they first ran into three drunken men rashly driving a bike. They were stopped and handed over to local police. As they drove further, Prem Nath spotted a Santro with four occupants. When one of them lit his cigarette, the DCP saw the men having liquor bottles and pistols in their hands.
Alarmed, the DCP asked the driver to speed up and intercept the Santro. When they came near the car, the Santro driver stepped on the gas and rammed into their vehicle. The police driver had a close shave. The car then crossed the Lajpat Nagar flyover and entered the service lane. The driver showed great presence of mind and blocked off the Santro, forcing it to come to a stop. Prem Nath and Singh got down and confronted the men.
A scuffle ensued as the men fought back and tried to flee. Aided by the driver and one other staff, the two cops pinned the quartet down. Local police were informed and the men handed over to them.
