NEW DELHI: The trauma and struggle of bringing up a differently-abled child, coupled with financial losses, appear to have led a 49-year-old south Delhi businessman and his wife to end their lives after allegedly murdering their 18-year-old son who had also contracted dengue.
The businessman, Shaminder Singh Arora, had reportedly incurred huge business losses at his aluminium plant in Sonipat.
His wife Nini (42), too, had not been keeping well. The couple’s son, Karandeep Singh Arora, was mentally and physically challenged and studied in class VIII at Tamanna School, an institution for special kids at Panchsheel Marg.
The couple, who left behind suicide notes, allegedly killed Karandeep on Sunday night and then threw themselves in front of a moving train, barely 1km from their F-block flat in Sarita Vihar.
Virender Singh Chahal, additional CP (southeast) said several letters in the flat indicated that the couple had planned to end their lives. "We are waiting for the postmortem report to ascertain if Karandeep died due to foul play or was a victim of natural causes,"said Chahal.
In his suicide note, the businessman blamed himself for his actions. Addressing his 80-year-old father, Daljeet Singh — the only surviving resident of the flat — Shaminder wrote: "Dearest Daddy, this will be the most difficult night for you as you get our news. I am truly sorry for all the pain I have caused... May God never give you a son like me and may He have mercy on you." The letter ends with "Your son’’ without his name being signed.
