Cops turn mentors, steer minor back to school
New Delhi: In the narrow lanes of Jahangirpuri, a school dropout with a history of petty offences is being given a chance at reform as police step in as mentors to help him return to the classroom.
The staff at Jahangir Puri police station — in a shift from the traditional role of enforcement — have facilitated the minor’s admission to a nearby govt school.
With his father surviving on odd jobs and siblings also out of school, the teenager had little support or direction. Police said they saw the situation as one of vulnerability rather than criminal intent and decided early intervention through education would be more effective than allowing the child to slip deeper into the justice process.
It all began with a conversation. Officers spoke to the minor in the presence of his parents and asked if he wanted to resume his studies. After he agreed, police helped complete the admission formalities and extended support beyond enrolment.
To ensure continuity, the initiative includes providing the student with a school uniform and textbooks, along with career counselling to help him visualise alternatives to crime.
“It is important to note that the child was a school dropout who was found involved in minor offences. Recognising the need for timely intervention, the police staff took proactive steps to ensure his rehabilitation through education,” said DCP (north-west) Akanksha Yadav.
Officers said the case is not an isolated one. “In slums, lack of guidance often pushes vulnerable children towards negative influences. We are identifying eight to 10 more students from similar backgrounds and facilitating their enrolment in schools,” a senior police officer said.
To prevent these children from falling back into the same cycle, a local beat officer will be assigned to each student, tasked with monitoring regular attendance and providing continued support.
