Delhi cops to crack whip on lane violators from today
NEW DELHI: The
Drivers will be slapped with fines for weaving in and out of traffic or cutting through it to take turns at these intersections. In an advisory, police have asked drivers to ensure that they are travelling within the marked lanes to avoid being hauled up.
Gantry-mounted cameras and CCTVs installed around the city will scan through the roads, especially the ones having a heavy flow of traffic, said a senior officer. “Notices under the new Motor Vehicle Act will be sent to their addresses and on their registered mobile phone number. The violation will attract fines of Rs 500 for the first offence and Rs 1,500 for the subsequent offences for private vehicles while heavy and commercial vehicles can be charged Rs 10,000,” he said.
Road buoys will initially be used to mark lanes for buses, private vehicles and right turns at some crossings, but these will be removed once drivers get accustomed to lane driving. Traffic cops posted at these crossings will click photographs of the violators on their mobile phone to maintain social distancing.
On Thursday, an awareness drive was conducted near Rajghat. The maximum number of violation was caused by private vehicle drivers followed by auto and two-wheeler drivers on Ring Road and Outer Ring Road. Similar drives were also conducted at Majnu Ka Tila-Chandgi Ram Akhada crossing and Peeragarhi-Punjabi Bagh crossing.
Major intersections like ITO, Adchini, Bhairon Road and Madhuban Chowk see worst instances of lane violation. In areas like ITO, vehicles turning right towards Vikas Marg stay in the extreme left lane and cut through the traffic when the signal turns green, an officer said. “We advised drivers to keep their vehicles on the right side of the road if they are to turn right and follow a streamline to avoid collisions,” he added.
