NEW DELHI: To the prevailing hubbub over the proposal to cut down 16,500 trees in the redevelopment of seven government housing colonies, Congress has added the issue of the felling of 1,700 trees on

Mathura Road

. The party has planned a protest at Sunder Nagar on Friday.

Yasmin Kidwai, who represents Nizamuddin East in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, wrote to chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday wondering why Delhi government had cleared the felling of hundreds of trees on Mathura Road and in Sunder Nagar when it was opposing the Centre's decision to hack down 16,500 trees in south Delhi. The Congress' move comes in the wake of Delhi high court having ordered a stay on all tree-felling till July 4.

"It is surprising and shocking to see that GNCTD has not only approved the felling of trees around Mathura Road, but the Public Works Department has been recklessly cutting trees overnight for the Integrated Transit Corridor Development Plan in and around Pragati Maidan," alleged Kidwai's letter, which was also marked to lieutenant governor Anil Baijal and Union urban development minister Hardeep Singh Puri.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi, in a tweet on Thursday, asked people to "stand with the Congress and together let's fight this madness". In a similar vein, Ajay Maken, president of the Congress in Delhi, tweeted, "It's a shame that both the AAP & the BJP have undone all the good work done by @SheilaDikshit led Congress Govt!"
