GURGAON: Days after filing the chargesheet in the Rs 405.5 crore Citibank scam, the Gurgaon police arrested Raghu Raj Puri, father of the main accused Shiv Raj Puri. One of their family friends, Rajender Chand, was also arrested on Monday evening. “These two played their roles in this scam with Shiv Raj’s consent. We arrested them after interrogation,” said police commissioner S S Deswal.
Police had been claiming that senior Puri, who is also the managing director of Norman Martin brokers Pvt Ltd, had guided his son in this scam and advised him on how to invest on the stock market. Police officers said Raghu Raj and Rajendra Chand were under the scanner before they joined investigation.
Cops found that both played a key role in the scam. One senior police officer said at least Rs 50 crore was transferred to the account of senior Puri’s firm. “Some amount was also deposited in the account of the other accused Rajendra Chand. It was Chand’s idea to tap into high networth investors (HNI) for investing in Shiv Raj’s fraudulent scheme,” said an officer. Shiv Raj’s parents Raghu Raj and Deeksha Puri had joined the investigation after they failed to get an anticipatory bail from both the Gurgaon court and Punjab and Haryana high court. They were also interrogated by top cops in the city.
