Charges filed, Jahangirpuri riot accused granted bail
New Delhi: A Delhi court has granted bail to an accused of the 2022 Jahangirpuri riot observing that some of the co-accused have already been granted bail in the matter by the Delhi high court.
The court of additional sessions judge Satish Kumar also observed that the investigation is completed and chargesheet has already been submitted in the court.
“The investigation qua the accused has already been completed and chargesheet filed. The same has been also committed to this court for trial. It will take a long time to conclude the trial and no purpose would be served to keep the accused in judicial custody. Some of the co-accused have been granted bail by the honorable high court and some of the co-accused have been granted bail by this court,” observed the court while granting bail.
Counsel appearing for Tabrez Khan (39), the accused, submitted in the court that he has been falsely implicated. “The entire case of the prosecution is based upon CCTV footage and there are around 50 accused in the present case. It would take a long time to conclude the trial and hence, Tabrez Khan may kindly be released on bail,” submitted Satnarain Sharma, the counsel.
The prosecution counsel PK Ranga opposed the bail saying that Khan was held on the basis of CCTV footage and he was one of the prime accused as part of the rioting mob on April 16, 2022.
On the said day, violence broke out in Jahangirpuri after a religious procession was allegedly stopped by members of another community. As many as eight police personnel and a civilian had sustained injuries in the violence. Khan has been chargesheeted with 36 others in the matter.
