Councillors fight all night long at Delhi MCD House, then sleep there: Key developments
After peaceful election for the mayor and deputy mayor's post, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi saw a brawl breaking out soon after.
The ruckus took place over the election of Standing committee members. Till 11.45pm, the house saw ninth adjournment
of the day was announced.
The uproar began when newly elected mayor Shelly Oberoi declared that mobile phones would be allowed in the polling booth.
There was immediate protest from the BJP members, who rushed to the well of the House and said it was against the norms to allow mobile phones in this manner.
The BJP members alleged that the AAP councillors were taking photos of the ballot papers to ensure there was no cross voting
The councillors even threw bottles and slippers at each other, in the process stalling the elections for the six Standing Committee members till 11.45pm, when the ninth adjournment of the day was announced.
The acrimonious proceedings during the election of the Standing Committee members led to a series of adjournments — at 6.34pm, 7.57pm, 8.10pm, 8:50pm, 10pm, 10.30pm, 11.02pm, 11:20pm and then for one hour at 11:40pm.
"The mayor has allowed mobile phones, and it is evident AAP councillors are clicking photos of their ballot papers," claimed BJP councillor Kamaljeet Sehrawat
The allegations were made in the backdrop of AAP having secured only 150 votes in the mayoral contest and 147 in the deputy mayor’s election despite claiming to have 151 votes in the House.

- The MCD House was adjourned for 24-hours till 10am on Friday without electing standing committee members amid ruckus.
- The MCD House was repetedly adjourned, as AAP and BJP councillors continued to clash with each other amid heavy chaos and sloganeering.
- As per the visuals, while some councillors can be seen fighting, others can be seen sleeping in the house.
- The house faced repeated disruptions amid the heavy sloganeering and chaos.
- The situation became so chaotic that the councillors started throwing ballot boxes in the well.
- Some could be seen pushing others while some exchanged blows.
- The chaos erupted during the election for the members of the standing committee when BJP alleged that during the secret voting, the councillors were taking photographs of the ballots through their mobile, which is a violation of the secret ballot.
- Delhi mayor Shelly Oberoi had alleged that BJP councillors tried to attack her during the standing committee elections.
- AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar attacked BJP accusing it of doing "hooliganism" in the house.
- Hitting back at the AAP, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla called it an "Anarchist Acrimonious Party".
- Earlier in the day, Shelly Oberoi was elected as the new mayor of Delhi after having secured 150 votes on Wednesday.
- The voting began at 11.30am after the Supreme Court ruled that the Delhi Mayor election be conducted. The court also ruled that the aldermen (nominated councillors) would have no right to vote.
