NEW DELHI: The election process for the city’s seven Lok Sabha seats kicked off on Monday with the filing of 15 nominations on Day 1. While most of the nominations were filed by candidates representing unrecognised parties, Yogender Chandoliya (61) of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was the only one from a national or state party to submit his documents.
The former mayor of erstwhile North Delhi Municipal Corporation filed his candidature from the reserved Lok Sabha constituency of North West Delhi. While Chandoliya filed two sets of nominations — a common practice among functionaries of prominent parties to ensure they remain in fray even if one set of papers is rejected due to any discrepancy, his son Chitresh (35) filed nomination as a backup candidate.
A candidate of an unrecognised party, too, filed two sets of nominations from Chandni Chowk seat.
According to election officials, 15 nomination forms of 13 candidates were received, including five from Chandni Chowk, four from North West Delhi, and two each from West, North East and East Delhi constituencies. No nomination was received for South Delhi and New Delhi seats, officials said.
The nomination process for the May 25 election will continue till May 6, on all days except Sundays, the documents will be scrutinised on May 7 while the last date to withdraw the candidature is May 9.
On Tuesday, BJP’s New Delhi candidate Bansuri Swaraj and AAP’s South Delhi candidate Sahiram Pahalwan will file their nominations.
Chandoliya reached the office of the returning officer at Kanjhawala in a huge procession, accompanied by Rajasthan deputy CM Premchand Bairwa, Delhi Lok Sabha election in-charge Om Prakash Dhankar, co-in-charge Alka Gurjar and Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva.
A stage was set up at Mangolpuri’s Ramlila Maidan where Chandoliya addressed party workers before filing his papers. “I have been a political worker for 40 years and will continue to remain one. My priority will be to expedite development work in my constituency. It is my commitment to remain available to the electorate all the time,” Chandoliya said.
As per the nomination affidavit, Chandoliya completed his graduation in political science and history from Meerut-based Swami Vivekanand Subharti University in 2022. In the 2020 assembly election, Chandoliya had declared his education qualification as ‘12th pass’. The total movable and immovable assets, including his wife’s, stand at Rs 2.76 crore.
