NEW DELHI: The apparent one-upmanship between the CBI and Delhi Police in the investigations into the PMT leak threatens to degenerate into a case of washing dirty linen in public.
The fact that CBI had let off the main accused, Ranjeet Verma, last year after interrogating him has been further corroborated by the disclosures made by his aide, Nikhil Mehrotra, in police custody.
Mehrotra had allegedly helped Ranjeet solve the leaked question papers.
Mehrotra, classmate of Ranjeet in a Nagpur medical college, has said in his statement that CBI had let off Ranjeet after taking money from him in January this year. According to him, Ranjeet had fled to Nagpur after the police raided his hideout in New Ashok Nagar.
Ranjeet, according to Mehrotra, told him there was nothing to worry as the case would soon be transferred to the CBI. Ranjeet, he said, told him that he had paid CBI money to escape from their clutches and that he would do the same again.
The police have sent a copy of the disclosure to the CBI asking them to conduct an inquiry. A CBI spokesperson, however, denied receiving any intimation. "The Delhi police have not told us anything about this," said the spokesperson.
"This seems to be a knee-jerk reaction to the fact that we arrested their officer Sanjay Gupta for demanding money from an accused," said another CBI official.
"The disclosure is significant as Ranjeet Verma had been questioned by the CBI thrice in the last two years. He was, however, released on all occasions," said an officer.
