NEW DELHI: A senior citizen, who had recently employed a maid at her residence in Defence Colony, discovered that the maid had stolen all the gold and diamond jewellery and cash from her house four days after she kept her on the job. The victim claimed that the jewellery was worth several lakhs and her lifetime savings. Following the incident, South district police has registered a case of theft.
76 year old Manjit Kaur, resident of Defence Colony, told the cops that she had engaged a part time cleaning servant on August 15 at her house. "The woman introduced herself as Mamta and said she lived in Kotla and that her husband has a betel shop there. She told me that she came to my house with the reference of the chowkidaar of C block and that she knew her previous employee Latesh. She also told me that Latesh would not be coming back as she is not well. I gave her the job," Kaur said in her complaint.
On August 19, Mamta came to Kaur's house around 7.30 am and started cleaning the lobby. "While I was in the kitchen, Mamta left saying she was going to clean the staircase and would be back shortly. A little later, I went into my bedroom and noticed my keys hanging from my cupboard which I keep under my pillow. When I opened my cupboard, I saw that my drawer was also open and jewellery and cash were missing," she added in the complaint.
The stolen items included 14 gold bangles, four gold bracelets, 5 gold chains, 10 gold rings, 8 gold earrings, four diamond bangles, two diamond bracelets, two diamond pendants, five diamond sets, four diamond rings and 10 diamond earrings. Apart from jewellery, maid took away cash around Rs 2 lakh and 7000 pounds. Police officials said that stolen items are worth several lakhs.
