NEW DELHI: Mid-forties temperature, energy sapping heat and hours of tramping through the crowded DU campus, enough to drive your mind away from couture? Absolutely not.
It’s the first day of admissions to Delhi University and in youth-country, freedom from school uniforms has been declared.
Favourite colour: Red rules, obviously the rising mercury levels are not a factor.
‘‘Are you kidding? I’ve been waiting 14 years to wear what I want to college, the weather isn’t going to stop me,’’ said Aanchal Sharma, as her red top turned maroon due to sweat patches. T-shirts even red pants provided bright daubs of colour to a day shimmering with heat. Concessional colours were rose pink, white and mustard.
Silhouette of the day: J Lo is definitely hotter in DU than Kylie. Low waist boot cut denims with a tummy exposing top for that ‘heavy bottomed’ look. ‘‘Perfect for the Indian figure,’’ says Neha Gupta, accompanied by her very disapproving mother.
Those with loaded midriffs, should wait for the puppy fat to go or they should hit the gym, pronto. Bulging biceps okay, bulging tummy not so nice. Teamed with platform shoes or clogs, all set for business. Guys hung loose with the ‘Jack and the beanstalk’ look, with a loose T-shirt and Capri pants.
Fashion no-no: ‘‘It’s parallel pyjamas with small kurtis. Sooo last year that we’re scared of being mistaken for a senior,’’ said Tanya Malik, looking disapprovingly at her friend Shruti.
Fashion must have: These are definitely cool shades, not just because of the blinding summer but also to use as a hairband. ‘‘Floaters are out in favour of traditional espadrille sandals, the kind which strap up to your ankle,’’ said Neha Gupta. Just watch out for weird tan patterns though.
Commonest denominator: Have to carry a long strapped back pack for the complete look, this should have a cellphone pocket for easy access.
