Cab driver attacked, carjacked in Rohini; three held for extortion racket
New Delhi: A gang allegedly involved in carjacking and extorting cab drivers at knifepoint in Rohini has been busted, with three people arrested, police said.
The case came to light after a cab driver was robbed and injured on New Karala Road in Jain Nagar early Monday. A PCR call regarding the robbery was received at Begumpur police station, following which the injured driver was rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital. A case was subsequently registered.
According to police, the driver said he had received a ride booking from Krishna Block in Rohini Sector 38 to Chandni Chowk around 1 am. Three passengers, aged around 22 to 23, boarded the cab after sharing the OTP. During the ride, one of them claimed he had forgotten his mobile phone and asked the driver to stop the vehicle.
The accused allegedly pulled the driver out of the car, assaulted him with a beer bottle and robbed the vehicle at knifepoint before fleeing towards Hanuman Chowk.
Later, the driver received messages demanding Rs 20,000 for the return of the cab and was sent mobile numbers for a UPI transaction. “Our team traced the stolen cab near Vikaspuri. The three accused were subsequently tracked and apprehended,” said DCP (Rohini) Shashank Jaiswal.
The accused have been identified as Ravi Kumar (20), Puspender (21) and Hargovind (21). During questioning, they allegedly confessed to committing a similar crime on April 16 as well. Police recovered two stolen cars and a mobile phone from their possession. A button-actuated knife and a mobile phone allegedly used for extortion were also seized, police said.
