NEW DELHI: A 40-year-old businessman, Mohammad Israr, allegedly killed his wife and two daughters before taking his own life at their home in northeast Delhi’s Jafrabad on Friday.
Initial investigation suggests that the family members were intoxicated and shot. The businessman’s two sons, aged 5 and 13, were found unharmed. They were apparently asleep at the time of the crime.
Police are investigating the “murder-suicide” and questioning relatives to ascertain the exact cause behind the incident. They have found the pistol and a mobile video shot by the businessman. Israr spoke about mounting debt and losses in the video.
A probe suggested that Israr had recently incurred huge losses and was in a lot of debt. His deceased wife has been identified as Farheen (38) and their daughters as Yashfika (11) and Inaya (9). The family lived on the third floor of a building. Israr’s parents and other family members also live in the same building. While the parents live on the first floor, his younger brother, Farman, lives on the second floor.
A relative said Israr lived in Saudi Arabia for several years with his family where he dealt in watches and other electronic goods. However, he returned to Delhi after sustaining losses and started a business of jeans in Jafrabad, which he used to send to Mumbai. The business was running in losses for the last one year. “This had caused him immense mental agony,” the relative added.
Asked how the murders were discovered, another family member said the couple’s son, Rehan, woke up around 12.30pm and went to his parents’ room. He found his parents lying on the bed, while his sisters were on the floor in a pool of blood. “Froth was coming out of their mouths too,” said the relative.
Rehan rushed to Farman’s house to seek help. Farman went upstairs and found that the family members were shot and a pistol lay near Israr’s body. He then called the police.
Investigation and questioning of family members revealed that Israr put his sons to sleep around 1am and then fed sedatives mixed in food to his wife and daughters. When they fell asleep, Israr shot them dead. The family members denied hearing any gunshots, so police suspect the incident took place in the early hours.
“An FIR of murder has been filed and the source of weapon is being investigated. The bodies will be handed over to the family after autopsy,” said DCP (Northeast) Sanjay Sain.
