NEW DELHI: Neither the leaked jail videos of Satyendar Jain nor delimitation nor any delays could help Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the municipal polls, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) election in-charge Durgesh Pathak said on Wednesday.
Speaking to TOI after the party’s victory, Pathak said, “BJP tried everything. They tried all means to defame us. They put the election on hold, went ahead with the process of delimitation and changed the wards as per their requirement. Today, Delhi’s public has given its reply to the party. The public has responded to BJP sending Jain to jail and conducting raids at Manish Sisodia’s house.”
Satyendra Jain has been in jail since June after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate. ED and CBI also conducted raids on Sisodia house and office alleging corruption in the excise policy.
Pathak, who is also the MLA from Rajinder Nagar, said he was confident BJP would not be able to poach AAP MLAs or interfere in the election of the mayor.
On why the party did not see a landslide victory, Pathak said, “During elections, a few numbers do fluctuate but the mandate of the people is clear, that they were tired of BJP which had been ruling the municipal corporation for the past 15 years.”
Crediting the party’s victory to the popularity of the chief minister, Pathak said, “The people of Delhi have immense trust in Arvind Kejriwal. There are AAP MLAs in the assembly and voters felt that if councillors are also elected from the same party, it would be easier for them to get work done.”
Pathak vowed that councillors elected from the party will work together to make the city cleaner and better. “All our MLAs in Delhi are working honestly. Similarly, the municipal councillors will work hard. They are very honest and we had given tickets to old volunteers of the party,” said Pathak.
As AAP’s election in-charge, Pathak was responsible for managing the party’s entire campaign. On Wednesday, as the party celebrated, AAP workers thanked him and lifted him on their shoulders and took pictures.
Pathak’s constituency also saw the party performing well, winning two out of three wards. While Jyoti Gautam defeated BJP’s Mohan Lal by 4,713 votes in Inderpuri ward, Arti Chawla defeated BJP’s Manika Nishchal by 1,397 votes in Rajinder Nagar ward.
However, in Naraina ward, BJP’s Umang Bajaj defeated AAP’s Vijender Garg by a margin of 3,740 votes.
