NEW DELHI: Delhi BJP on Tuesday attacked the AAP government over the arrest of a women and child development department officer on charges of raping a minor, stating that it will stage a protest in front of the residence of minister Kailash Gahlot on Wednesday.
Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva claimed that the accused, Premoday Khakha, had worked as Gahlot's officer on special duty when he was heading the department.
"Delhi BJP will stage a protest at Gahlot's residence demanding his resignation," said Sachdeva. Gahlot didn't respond on the issue. "In the past seven or eight years of the Kejriwal government, there have been complaints against many ministers, MLAs and officers where they have mentally and financially exploited women or common people; it should be investigated," Sachdeva alleged.
AAP hit back, questioning if Delhi Police and BJP were trying to hide anything in the case. "Delhi Police is adamant in not letting Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal meet the survivor. What is it that BJP and Delhi Police are trying to hide? Are they connected to it? Did Delhi Police not arrest him because of some pressure?" asked minister Saurabh Bharadwaj.
He added that any government official arrested like this would be suspended. "Delhi government will try to appoint the best lawyer and make sure that the culprit gets the appropriate punishment," Bharadwaj said.
