BJP: Delhi govt denying ration to thousands of families
New Delhi: The leader of opposition in Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta, on Monday accused AAP govt of being anti-poor for "depriving thousands of families by withholding ration".At Delhi BJP office, Gupta alleged that Kejriwal govt had conspired against the poor and denied them their rights by halting the distribution of ration. He said BJP legislative group would soon meet LG to demand his intervention. MLA Abhay Verma and Delhi BJP media in-charge Praveen Shankar Kapoor were also present at the press conference.According to the 2011 census, 1,56,800 extremely poor families in the city were entitled to 35kg ration per month, which included 21kg wheat, 14kg rice and 1kg sugar, Gupta said. "These families mainly comprised landless labourers, agricultural workers, marginal farmers , slum dwellers, daily wage labourers, essentially the most marginalised sections of the society," he added. In 2015, when AAP came to power, 76,458 poor families were receiving ration under this scheme, but after nearly 10 years, the number has come down to 66,532, Gupta claimed. The number should have actually increased over the past decade, he said.Gupta said that after BJP demanded that ration cards be issued to all eligible families, the food and civil supplies department had prepared a list of them on July 31, 2019 and sent it for approval to the minister concerned. Kejriwal govt, which claims to be a well-wisher of the poor and marginalised, has taken away the food they should have received for free under a central govt scheme, he alleged.AAP govt didn't react on the issue.
