NEW DELHI: Lakhs of people from Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern UP flocked to the Yamuna banks and other water bodies to do the first Argh to Sun God on the first day of Chhath Puja on Saturday evening. While those at the Chhath ghats on Yamuna banks were lucky to get enough water, though polluted, those at India Gate and Naoroji Nagar were disappointed. Many like Sangeeta Sinha of Kalkaji, who had earlier planned to do the rituals at Boat Club, had to quickly change her plans.
"We kept on writing to NDMC but in vain. The reason cited was dengue...they could have filled it for a few hours," Sangeeta said.
Added Shatrughan Ram from South Extension: "About 5,000 people had planned to celebrate Chhath at Sanjay Garden opposite Safdarjung Hospital in Naoroji Nagar. But it remained dry even as devotees reached the spot. They had to resort to a chakka jam." But thanks to Haryana, Yamuna had enough water and the ghats at Wazirabad, Geeta Colony, ITO, Kalindi Kunj and Kondli were crowded. At ITO, according to Thakur Jagdish Singh of Chhath Puja Samiti, "over a lakh performed pehla argh and about 5,000 familes are expected to stay at the ghat at night as they have come from distant areas. They will be here for the concluding ritual, doosra argh, on Sunday morning."At Dilli Haat, it was a dry Chhath in front of a Madhubani painting of Sun God and Chhathi Maiyya. About 50 families performed the puja in front of this painting amidst the sound of drums. Many like Ajay Kumar of Dwarka's Sector 8 said it seemed like a "Mini Bihar" had been created in Delhi. "Due to occupational reasons, one cannot go to Bihar every year. But I don't miss that anymore as the fervour and ambience are all the same."At Dabri in Nasirpur area, the festival was celebrated in a big way, said Ajit Dubey, president of Bhojpuri Samaj. "Thousands of people thronged the Dabri Chhath Ghat. Outer Delhi MP Sajjan Kumar and local MLA Mahabal Mishra, besides a lot of senior government officials, were present.
