New Delhi: Dubbing former chief minister
Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia as Bade Miyan and Chhote Miyan on Monday, Union home minister
Amit Shah accused the duo of "looting" Delhi and ignoring the city's development by making excuses and bickering with the central govt.
"States with double engine govt have progressed, but Delhi has turned into a dump yard, thanks to AAP govt's penchant for making false promises and constantly fighting with the Centre," said Shah while addressing election rallies in Jangpura and Dwarka. "Bade Miyan aur Chhote Miyan ne dilli ko loota hai," he said, adding that Sisodia, the AAP candidate for the Jangpura assembly seat, was the only education minister in the country to go to jail for corruption.
"An education minister's job is to ensure good education to children, open schools and colleges and to look after the welfare of the teachers. But this man who came from Patparganj did nothing except open liquor shops in every nook and corner of the city," alleged Shah. Predicting that both Kejriwal and Sisodia would lose their seats, Shah said, "Their lies have been exposed and the people will not vote for them."
BJP has nominated Sardar Tarvinder Singh Marwah to challenge AAP's Sisodia for the Jangpura seat. Sisodia shifted from Patparganj, which he had won in 2013, 2015 and 2020. The Congress contestant for the seat is Farhad Suri. In the previous assembly elections, AAP's Praveen Kumar triumphed in Jangpura, beating BJP's Impreet Singh Bakshi by a margin of 16,063 votes.
Charging Kejriwal with being a cry-baby who incessantly quarrelled with the central govt rather than taking care of the interests of the people of Delhi and fulfilling the promises he made, the home minister said he won the mandate to end corruption but indulged in multi-crore-rupee graft himself. "He broke the world records for telling lies and breaking promises but still goes around complaining that he was allowed to work by the central govt," said Shah. "Arre, tum CM ho, satta tumhare pass hai, kyon nahi karne dete? Karna nahi hai (You were the CM, you had the power, so why would we stop you? But you didn't want to work)."
Shah described Kejriwal as a serial liar who had given people in the city only garbage, toxic water and corruption. Promising that BJP would change the face of Delhi and make it a world-class capital city with widespread development, Shah said the saffron party would ensure a clean Yamuna within three years.
"Kejriwal promised to clean the Yamuna and take a dip in it. He neither cleaned it, nor did he ever take the promised dip in the river," alleged Shah, claiming in a lighter vein, "BJP workers pushed Kejriwal's cutout into the river water. Just doing that made them sick due to the pollution and they had to be hospitalised at AIIMS."
The home minister also referred to the surgical strikes against Pakistan-based terrorists in late 2016 and credited PM Narendra Modi for ending terrorism in the Kashmir valley. He said the Modi govt would also eradicate naxal violence by March 2026. Shah declared, "We pledged to abolish Article 370 in J&K. Leaders such as Kejriwal, Akhilesh Yadav, Mamata Banerjee and MK Stalin expressed their opposition to the move, warning of potential violence. However, their predictions turned out to be inaccurate, as there wasn't even a single instance of stone-pelting. Since then, Kashmir has welcomed over 2.8 crore tourists. Lal Chowk, where the national Tricolour could not even fly earlier, now celebrates with processions during Krishna Janmashtami."
