Atishi to be sworn in as Delhi CM at Raj Niwas today

NEW DELHI: Delhi is all set to get a new chief minister on Saturday with a senior AAP functionary and a minister in the outgoing dispensation, Atishi, going to take the oath of office and secrecy. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at Raj Niwas in the evening. She will be administered the oath by lieutenant governor VK Saxena.

President Droupadi Murmu has approved Atishi's appointment and also cleared the appointment of five ministers.

The change in govt was necessitated by the resignation of outgoing CM Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday, who announced that he would occupy the chair only after obtaining the "certificate of honesty" from the electorate in the form of winning the upcoming assembly polls. Kejriwal had announced his resignation two days after he walked out of Tihar Jail on Sept 13, spending over five months in prison in the excise policy case.

Atishi, who was nominated as Kejriwal's successor in the meeting of the legislative party on Tuesday morning, staked claim before LG to form the new govt the same evening.

Officials said the files of both the resignation and the govt formation were sent to the President for her nod on Tuesday.

While four ministers from the outgoing govt are being retained, AAP said Sultanpur Majra MLA Mukesh Kumar Ahlawat would be the fresh face in the cabinet.
