NEW DELHI: The competition at Delhi University this year is tougher than ever. Seats for several popular courses have been allotted to those who scored the maximum CUET score of 800. Even the margin between the highest and lowest scores is slim. Principals say the competition is of only a few decimal points, especially in humanities.

DU did not release the first seat allocation details publicly. However, data assessed from the colleges shows that at Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), the highest score was 800 marks for BCom (H) and Economics (H).

At Miranda House, the highest allotted scores were again 800 marks for two courses — political science and English (H). The lowest scores that have been allotted seats in these two subjects are 787 and 760, respectively.

For Political Science (H) at Ramjas College, one of the most sought after courses where the cut-off used to hover around 99% earlier, the highest CUET score is 786.4 while the lowest is 781.9.

At Ramanujan College, applied psychology is one of the courses with the highest score allotted. While the highest CUET score was 758.3, the lowest was a little above 727.

SP Agarwal, principal of the college, said, “The competition, especially for courses in humanities, is quite fierce, with only a few decimal points making the difference. The process has been quite smooth and we have not faced too many difficulties.”

While the high scorers are taking admission for humanities and commerce courses, in science courses, the highest marks for which seats have been allotted are on the lower side.

Data provided by the admission committee of Miranda House showed that for Physics (H), the highest score is 518 and the lowest is 401. The total in the case of science courses is out of 600.

Sanjay Batra, a chemistry professor at Sri Venkateswara College, said, “The scores obtained by students would have depended on the difficulty level. One possible reason for low scores can be that many students were debarred as they did not apply for a language course. Usually, for sciences, either PCM (physics/chemistry/mathematics) or PCB (physics/chemistry/biology) is considered. However, this time students were required to appear for a language paper in CUET. Because many did not, they became ineligible for admission. So, this could have led to reduced scores.”

Another reason could be that science stream students had scored less than the others in the entrance exam.
