NEW DELHI: For the past two days, several north Delhi areas are receiving dirty water due to an increase in ammonia level in the Yamuna, which has affected the functioning of the Wazirabad water treatment plant. Some areas received either less or no supply, local residents claimed.
This is the second time this month that the ammonia level has increased in the Yamuna and affected the water supply. Earlier, on Dec 2, the problem occurred, but the level reduced within a day.
"Very little water is coming. Our water supply time was 6 am to 8 am, but now, even that is not fixed. We have been told that there is less production in the Wazirabad plant. Many residents complained on the helpline number 1916 but in vain. Our area is at the tail end of the supply line. Whenever anything happens in the supply chain, we suffer the most. If this is the condition in winter, one can only imagine the situation in summer," said Sanjay Gupta, president of Model Town Resident Welfare Association.
According to sources, 16% of the supply from the Wazirabad plant's total capacity of 131 million gallons per day has been reduced, as the ammonia level is around 2.5 ppm in the river.
"Today, dirty water was received at many locations across Aryapura, Malkganj and Mukempura areas. The supply was affected on Monday and Tuesday too," said Ashok Bhasin, president of North Delhi Federation of Resident Welfare Associations.
There was no response from Delhi Jal Board on this.
