Kal Penn feels American television has become very diverse in the last decade compared to the earlier stereotypical portrayal of Indians on their shows.
The Indian-origin actor said while growing up, he sawvery few faces who looked like him on TV and in films butthere has been a lot of change in the portrayal of South AsianAmericans on the small screen.
"Stereotypes stand overall but American TV has advanced a lot, more than movies in the last 10 years. Especially, if we are talking about South Asian Americans then there are shows like 'New Girl', 'Mindy Project' and 'Master of None'," Penn said at an event here.
The 39-year-old star, in the country to shoot GuneetMonga's "The Ashram", feels streaming services have become agreat platform for diversity.
"
Aziz Ansari is crushing it everywhere. He is amazing... his stand up is incredible. TV is changing in a big way. Films are slow to change and there are a number of reasons for that but there is a reason that cutting edge digital platform is the place for a lot more diversity," the "Namesake" star said.
Penn feels big networks are also keen to reflect this diversity.
"Priyanka's (Chopra) show is on ABC. I have a new showcoming in fall which I am very excited about. Bigger networksare also taking the lead... They are a lot more reflective ofwhat America is like. So, it is really exciting." BKJCH
