NEW DELHI: While the traders bandh on Friday saw little success in other parts of the city, in east Delhi it met with 100% cooperation from traders. All the markets in Seelampur, Vikas Marg, Jagatpuri and Krishna Nagar were closed.
Commuters also had an easier time as the otherwise choked Vikas Marg main road and Shahdara Road were deserted, ensuring a freeflow of traffic.
1x1 polls
Vikas Marg main road — one of the busiest roads in east Delhi — regularly witnesses long traffic jams due to the ongoing Metro construction.
On Friday, however, the scene was completely opposite. Traffic was minimal on this stretch, something which commuters claimed was a blessing. Said Ranjit Kumar, an MNC executive: "Driving on this road on Friday was a pleasure. For once, we were not stuck in long queues and there was no motorists constantly honking which is regular feature here."
Much against last weeks bandhs which saw violent protests, Friday's bandh went off peacefully and there were no reports of any trouble. Heavy police personnel and paramilitary forces could be seen deployed in various strategic points to prevent any outward incident from taking place.
Said Satyavir Agarwal, president, Vikas Marg Traders Association: "Friday's bandh was planned to be peaceful in order to make the government realise how the sealing drive is adversely affecting the lives of many. However, the shops will be open on Saturday." A number of east Delhi colonies like Seelampur and Vikas Marg have been the trouble spots earlier. Earlier on November 7, when the traders had called for a complete bandh, east Delhi had seen violent protests.
