GHAZIABAD: Ajay Katara, who was the prime witness in the case of abduction and murder of Nitish Katara by Vikas Yadav, son of former MP D P Yadav, was on Thursday night arrested by the Indirapuram police in controversial circumstances.
Katara of Ashok Vatika, who is no relative of deceased Nitish Katara as sometimes mistakenly presumed, was accused of attempting to abduct Dharmendra Yadav, allegedly an associate of D P Yadav, on Thursday evening.
Interestingly, Katara had also, earlier, reportedly told the Indirapuram police that Dharmendra Yadav and his associates had fired at him and tried to abduct him.
He had also filed a case of attempt to murder him against Yadav at the Sihani Gate police station on January 25 last.
After this, the Sihani Gate police had chargesheeted Yadav. And, on an application by Katara's lawyer, an additional chief judicial magistrate's court had in January issued a non-bailable warrant for Yadav's arrest. But, he remained at large.
Asked to comment, Ghaziabad senior superintendent of police L Ravi Kumar said, "Yadav will also be arrested in a day or two. About Katara, we have learnt that he went to Yadav's Indirapuram home with his PSOs and put him in his car. But while he was abducting Yadav, the whole city collected after Yadav's wife raised an alarm. And, Katara left Yadav and fled.''
He did not say why Yadav was at large for so long on a similar complaint. Neither did he comment on the fact that Katara had also alleged that Yadav tried to first abduct and then murder him, around the same time as Yadav's alleged abduction.
The alleged bid to abduct Yadav took place around 4.30 on Thursday evening. And, it was around this time, claimed Katara's counsel, S Chakravarti, that "Yadav had reportedly tried to abduct and later shot at Katara. Yadav had allegedly chased Katara's car with four of his own and those of his associates. And, during the chase, even fired at Katara. But, no case was registered on Katara's complaint.''
Meanwhile, Katara was on Friday afternoon presented before Ghaziabad special magistrate Sapna Mishra, who remanded him to 14 days in judicial custody. The refusal of bail to Katara was based on a technicality Mishra was not empowered to grant bail in such cases of abduction.
Chakravarti said "this is a sessions trial, and we will move the competent court for bail on Saturday.''
Meanwhile, contacted by this correspondent, Meerut police zone inspector general Gurdarshan Singh said, "I am directing the DIG to examine the matter and submit a report to me.''
