NEW DELHI: A recent security audit conducted by Delhi Police Metro Unit has revealed some weaknesses in the security measures at metro stations. It was conducted in the wake of the recent security breaches and graffiti incidents. The audit revealed numerous blind spots along metro tracks and poor-quality footage from perimeter walls. To address these issues, it recommended installing additional high-definition CCTV cameras at vulnerable locations. A rise in suicides on metro platforms has underscored the need for platform screen doors. As detailed in a letter from DCP/Metro dated July 23, the installation of PSDs is deemed crucial to prevent such tragedies and enhance passenger safety. The audit found that overgrown vegetation around metro stations and yards poses a security risk by facilitating unauthorised access. It suggested installation of concertina wire and iron grilles on boundary walls. Deploying additional security guards during night hours was also recommended. In response to the audit, DMRC stated that it currently has over 14,600 CCTV cameras i stalled across its lines and maintains policing through designated stations under Delhi Metro Rail Police. It acknowledged the existence of some dark spots and confirmed that an exercise to address these areas has been previously undertaken, with additional cameras installed as needed.
