NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders are scheduled to visit the BJP headquarters on Thursday, bringing with them samples of contaminated Yamuna water allegedly sourced from Haryana.

According to AAP, the water from Haryana contains ammonia levels of 7 parts per million (ppm), which they claim is harmful to public health.

AAP’s allegations regarding the contaminated water have sparked a political debate, with the party accusing the BJP of negligence in addressing the rising ammonia levels in the river, which provides water to the national capital.

EC to Kejriwal: Clarify allegations of 'poisoned' Yamuna water

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday responded to AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal's remarks about the Yamuna water being “poisoned,” urging him to separate the issue of ammonia contamination from his serious allegations of mass genocide and equating it to an act of war.

The ECI granted Kejriwal another opportunity to explain why action should not be taken against him for making inflammatory remarks that could promote disharmony, enmity between groups, and public unrest.

The Commission instructed Kejriwal to provide factual evidence related to the type, quantity, and manner of poisoning in the Yamuna River, along with the engineers involved, the location, and methodology used by Delhi Jal Board engineers to detect the alleged poison. He has been asked to submit this information by Friday at 11 am.

EC's position on water governance

The Election Commission also emphasized that the availability of clean and sufficient water is a critical governance issue. It urged all concerned governments to prioritize securing clean water for citizens, highlighting that disputes over long-standing water-sharing and pollution issues should be settled by the appropriate authorities.

The poll body further noted that legal agreements and directives from the Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal (NGT) already exist to address such concerns, and it would refrain from intervening in these matters during the brief election period.

Kejriwal's comments regarding the alleged contamination of the Yamuna water had stirred controversy earlier this week, with the Delhi CM accusing the Haryana government of deliberately poisoning the river. The matter remains under scrutiny as the Election Commission seeks clarification on the allegations.
