NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and candidate from Rithala, Mohinder Goyal, was attacked during a rally on Saturday, causing him to fall unconscious, according to the Delhi Police.
Goyal is currently receiving treatment at Ambedkar Hospital in Rohini.
The police received a PCR call at around 11.15am and quickly reached the location. An official stated, "We had received a call that AAP MLA Mohinder Goyal has been assaulted and he has fallen unconscious."
AAP MP Sanjay Singh accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the attack. Singh took to X, alleging, "BJP is losing badly in Delhi and in frustration, it has resorted to violence. AAP MLA Mohinder Goyal from Rithala was attacked by BJP goons. Where is the Election Commission sleeping?"
Goyal is contesting the upcoming Delhi assembly elections scheduled for February 5, facing competition from BJP’s Kulwant Rana and Congress’ Sushant Mishra.
Rithala, located in North West Delhi, is considered one of the key constituencies. Goyal has represented Rithala since 2015, succeeding BJP's Kulwant Rana, who won the seat in 2008 and 2013.
The incident comes amid ongoing political tensions, with Delhi Police previously issuing a notice to Goyal and his staff in connection to a case involving fake Aadhaar card documents and the arrest of several Bangladeshis. Goyal had dismissed the allegations as "politically motivated."
The Delhi assembly elections will be held on February 5, with vote counting scheduled for February 8.
