NEW DELHI: Residents of Jagatpur village in Burari staged a protest against Delhi’s electricity department, alleging prolonged power outages, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal criticised the BJP-led Delhi government on Friday, accusing it of worsening the city's power situation.
Kejriwal, speaking about the previous AAP government's efforts, posted on X, "We had set up the power system in Delhi with great difficulty, we had worked very hard. And we kept an eye on it daily. There was no power cut anywhere for ten years. These people have made the power situation worse in just one and a half months."
During the protest, residents reportedly blocked the Outer Delhi Ring Road, demanding a solution to the power supply issues in their area.
The demonstration took place as the Delhi government announced its Rs 1 lakh crore budget for 2025.
Chief minister Rekha Gupta described it as the "biggest increase" in budget allocations across the country. However, the opposition AAP criticised it, arguing that it had been presented "without an economic survey." Leader of Opposition Atishi also wrote to the assembly speaker, calling for a discussion on the budget details.
While presenting the budget, CM Rekha Gupta called it a "historic" step towards making Delhi an investment and innovation-friendly city. The Rs 1 lakh crore budget focuses on growth, development, and improving the quality of life for residents.
Key budget allocations include Rs 19,291 crore for education, reflecting a 17% rise from last year. The transport sector, including roads and bridges, has been granted Rs 12,952 crore— a 73% increase. Meanwhile, housing and urban development projects have received a 9% rise in funds.
Speaking on the budget, CM Gupta stated, "In 2024-2025, the budget was Rs 76,000 crore, and this time, the budget is Rs 1 lakh crore, which is an increase of 31.58 per cent. We can call it the biggest increase in any budget in the country."
