New Delhi: The 9.9km Deepali Chowk-Majlis Park section, part of the upcoming Janakpuri West to R K Ashram Marg corridor, is almost ready for operations.
An extension of the Magenta Line, this fully elevated stretch will have five intermediate stations: Pitampura, Prashant Vihar, North Pitampura, Haiderpur Badli Mor and Bhalswa. It includes three interchange stations connecting the Red Line at Pitampura, Yellow Line at Haiderpur Badli Mor and Pink Line at Majlis Park.
"The corridor will provide connectivity between the western and northern parts of Delhi. By shifting a substantial number of commuters from private vehicles and buses to the metro, the 8-km-long Deepali Chowk-Bhalswa stretch along Outer Ring Road is expected to ease congestion at major choke points, including Pitampura and Haiderpur Badli Mor/GT Karnal bypass," said an official of
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
The corridor will have a communication-based train control (CBTC) signalling system and unattended train operation capability. The project incorporates energy-efficient systems, including LED lighting and regenerative braking in rolling stock.
Special emphasis has been laid on tactile pathways, wheelchair-designated spaces in trains and inclusive station designs for persons with disabilities and senior citizens. All stations in the section are equipped with lifts, escalators, automatic fare collection gates and platform screen doors, ensuring a safe and seamless passenger experience.
The entire Janakpuri West-RK Ashram Marg corridor, part of the metro's Phase IV expansion, is 29.3 km long and has 22 stations. Of this, a 2-km section from Janakpuri West to Krishna Park Extension was opened on Jan 5 last year. "The rest of the stretch is expected to open in phases during 2026-2027," the official said.
As part of Phase-IV, six new corridors with a total length of 112.4km and 94 new stations were planned. Of these, the 12.3-km Majlis Park-Maujpur corridor, an extension of the Pink Line, is also ready for operations. The Aerocity-Tughlakabad corridor (Golden Line) is under construction.
Work on Saket G Block-Lajpat Nagar corridor, the fourth and smallest one of the metro and an extension of the new Golden Line, began last Dec 8. Two remaining corridors — Inderlok to Indraprastha (extension of the Green Line) and Rithala-Narela-Kundli (extension of the Red Line) — will begin this year.
The Union Cabinet recently approved three additional corridors — R K Ashram Marg to Indraprastha, Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj and Aerocity to Terminal 1 — as part of the metro's Phase V(A) expansion.
